In reality, AI amplifies existing processes. It rarely reinvents them without thoughtful redesign.   • Integration and maintenance: Connecting AI to legacy systems, building guardrails, monitoring drift, and ensuring compliance add ongoing overhead.
  • Security and governance: Risk assessments, bias mitigation, and regulatory adherence (e.g., EU AI Act) require investment.

Real-world estimates for 2025-2026 show small-scale implementations starting at $5,000–$50,000, mid-sized projects at $100,000–$500,000, and enterprise transformations exceeding $1 million. Ignoring these layers leads to budget overruns and abandoned efforts.

5. A General Lack of Understanding of AI Architecture and Operations

Beyond terminology, many decision-makers don’t grasp how AI systems are built, trained, deployed, and maintained. Models are not static; they require continuous monitoring for data drift, concept drift, and performance degradation. They start with narrow, high-value use cases: a retailer using predictive analytics to optimize inventory, a financial services firm deploying RAG-enhanced chatbots for compliance-safe customer support, or a manufacturer applying computer vision for quality inspection. These initiatives deliver quick wins, build internal capability, and create momentum for broader adoption.

They also invest in data foundations, cross-functional teams, and governance frameworks early. Success is incremental, pragmatic, and business-led, not technology-led.

AI has enormous potential to drive efficiency, innovation, and competitive advantage. But unlocking it requires moving beyond hype to disciplined execution.
